How products get picked

How products are matched to a shopper's answers, how budget answers work, and what exact and closest matches mean.

Updated 2026-10-06

When a shopper finishes the quiz, products are matched to their answers from your catalog. You do not tag products or connect answers to them; there is nothing to set up. Matching is included on every plan and never uses AI credit.

What it can pick from

  • Products published to your Online Store.
  • Products that are not sold out. A product with variants is skipped when none of its variants can be bought. A product without variants is kept.
  • Up to 2,500 products. The list is refreshed about every 10 minutes, so a change in your catalog can take a few minutes to show.

How a match is made

  1. The shopper's answers are read together with your questions, in the words shoppers saw.
  2. Each product is read from its title, type, vendor, tags, collections, description and options.
  3. The products that fit every answer are shown first, best fit first. When a product has options, such as sizes or colors, the card shows the option that fits.

Clear answers give the best matches. Write answers in the words your shoppers use, and keep product titles, tags and descriptions accurate. When you edit an answer, matching follows the new wording the next time a shopper finishes.

Budget questions

When a question asks about budget or price, such as "What's your budget?", answers that name an amount work as budgets, for example "Under 100", "100 to 250" or "250 and up". The price compared is the price shown on the result card. If a quiz has several budget questions, a product has to fit every one of them. When nothing in your catalog fits the budget, the shopper sees the closest products with the notice "Nothing matches every answer, so here's the closest."

Exact and closest matches

  • An exact match is a product that fits every answer the shopper gave.
  • When fewer than 3 products fit exactly, the list is topped up with near matches. Those are labelled Closest match.
  • When nothing fits every answer, the shopper sees the closest products with the notice "Nothing matches every answer, so here's the closest."
  • With Show answer match count on, each card shows how many of the shopper's answers it matched. With Show answer tags on result cards on, it lists which answers they were.
  • Up to 24 products can be delivered; the block shows the first few and a button to reveal more.

If matching is briefly unavailable

Shoppers still get results. If the full match cannot finish in time, the quiz ranks in-stock products by how closely their words and prices fit the answers, and labels them Closest match. Running out of AI credit never affects matching. Credit is explained in Plans and credit.
